[...] Perhaps a future generation of workers who grew up tech savvy can easily and productively have meetings via webinar and telephone conference call. More likely, we’ll eventually (despite the recent atrocious criteria issued by NTIA for the Broadband stimulus projects) get really high speed fiber networks, two-way HDTV, and true telework and video telepresence.
Agreed. I'm a Seattle resident and I have had it with Comcast. I want to switch to a provider but there is no alternative. Clearwire and DSL does not count. I mean real broadband, capable of 1080p HD and not the slightly better than DVD compressed video that Comcast claims as HD. How is it that we don't have Verizon serving the city of Seattle. Where's the competition?

You are right, the U.S. needs to get on the bandwidth bandwagon. You mentioned a number of cities in the U.S. that are deploying fiber. You should look in your own backyard as well. Here in Wa. state there are a number of communties that are now being served by fiber, and its does not come from Comcast or Qwest. There are a number of Public Utlities in Wa. that have deployed and are deploying fiber to customers. www.pud3telecom.com is one close utlity that has a very nice fiber optic network.
